Weather Eye: One pesky low seems to be lurking behind the last one

Happy Father’s Day! I mentioned here a few days ago about the pesky upper-level low-pressure system that was going to spin and wobble out of here by the weekend. Well, it has been doing that but keeps rotating back over us. Hence the heavy showers and hail on Saturday.

These types of upper lows combined with a complex upper air flow bring nightmares to weather forecasters. My forecast today is based on one computer model that indicates the low will rotate north of our area the next few days.

So, a mostly sunny day today through Wednesday with highs in the 75- to 80-degree range, maybe a few degrees higher if the low exits the area. If not, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more showers drift our way. Those 90-degree days you may have seen on extended outlooks on TV, I think, have vanished. Fine with me — anytime we can manage 75- to 80-degree days, that is a bonus.

Getting back to Saturday’s weather: Several heavy showers roared through Clark County, with a thunderstorm that dropped hail from Salmon Creek to Brush Prairie and Battle Ground just after noon. The hail was so intense that Debi Vonallmen-Smokey posted a photo on Facebook of her deck that was covered white with ice pellets.

A couple of water spouts were reported off the coast, and two funnel clouds were observed inland. A lightning strike split a tall Douglas fir tree in Gladstone. Despite scattered heavy showers, downtown Vancouver was s still running more than a half-inch below average for the month as of late Saturday afternoon. The cooler temperatures last week has brought us to just 2 degrees above average.

I might mention that after a few nice days this week, another pesky low may encompass the area with showers the end of the week. So I’m not really too optimistic that we will enjoy an extended period of nice weather. Most likely it will be unsettled at times. Maybe I’ll take the week off from weather and avoid the current weather pattern — not.

Enjoy your day!
