A goal from Aimee Kurfurst in the 84th minute on Saturday lifted the FC Salmon Creek Nemesis to the championship in the girls under-17 Oregon State Cup. The Nemesis beat Westside Timbers Copa of Beaverton in the championship match for teams of girls born in 1998.

Ashley Carter assisted on the title-winning goal from Kurfurst as the Nemesis beat a team that had won three consecutive age-group state titles. In the state tournament, FC Salmon Creek outscored its opponents 10-2, including a 3-1 win over Crossfire United Reserves in the May 1 semifinals.

The state title qualifies FC Salmon Creek to represent Oregon in the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional in June at Boise, Idaho.

The team previously won the Northwest Champions League for US Club Soccer to qualify for the National Premier League Finals, to be held in July at Aurora, Colo.

This Nemesis team includes players from high schools around Southwest Washington. In addition to Kurfurst of Prairie High and Carter of Camas, the roster includes Camas players Sabine Postma, Marley Lefore, Ellie Echeverio, Hannah Taie, Morgan Winston, Mikaela Winston and Moira Espinosa-Chaney, and Megan Sawyer (Prairie), Julie Williams (Mountain View), Angelina Krawczyk (Union), Katie Anthony (Columbia River), Erin Seigal (Ridgefield) and Madison Early (Mark Morris). The team is coached by Dan Macaya and Feike Postma.

LaCamas Half canceled; training program still on

A 12-week training program for beginning runners will kick off on Saturday at the Fleet Feet PDX store located at 16020 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd., No. 113 in Vancouver.

The program was initially planned to prepare participants for the LaCamas Lake Half Marathon. Fleet Feet PDX announced on Monday that the 2016 LaCamas Lake Half Marathon has been canceled.

The training program will find another Clark County race to partner with according to Holly Haffey, manager of the training program for Fleet Feet PDX.

This was to be the 13th edition of the LaCamas Lake Half Marathon. In announcing the cancelation of the race, Fleet Feet PDX cited the saturation of races in the region and the need to charge a higher entry fee to make the event viable.

The cost of the training program is $99. Training runs will take place at 8:30 a.m. each Saturday and at 6 p.m. each Wednesday.
