CAMAS – Fast starts are the early-season theme for the Camas football team.

For the second consecutive week the Papermakers pounced on an opponent from Oregon for an eye-popping victory. This one finished 49-7 over a Sherwood team that started the season ranked No. 3 among Class 6A schools in Oregon.

“I’m not surprised,” said senior Michael Mathews, who scored three touchdowns and helped a dominating defensive performance. “It shows the work we put in in practice every week. Our coaches always say if we grind Monday through Thursday Friday’s going to take care of itself.”

The Papermakers outgained the Bowmen 347 to 73 in the first half and led 42-7 at the break. Camas rushed for 200 first-half yards on 15 running plays. Jack Colletto completed 10 of 14 first-half passes including scoring throws to wide open receivers Mathews and Ryan Rushall.

Among the big plays were a 55-yard run around left end by Mathews on the second play of the game, and a 44-yard sprint up the middle by Colletto on the third Camas possession.

Mathews said Marcus Gray pulled and made the block that sprung him on his dash up the sideline.

“I saw my dude (Gray) pulling out and knew he was going to get the block and it was just open field from there,” Mathews said.

Soon it was clear sailing for the Papermakers. Colletto, who ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 157 and three scores, said the hole on his 44-yard touchdown run was too big to miss. The play made it 21-0 only 5:20 into the game.

“It was a read option play. I saw that (the Bowmen) were overloading the right side,” Colletto said. “I saw the hole and just went.”

Camas coach Jon Eagle admitted he did not anticipate such a dominating start from an offense that has eight new starters including Colletto and junior center Jordan Howes.

“We feel we’re at midseason form offensively,” Eagle said, something that is difficult to expect with a first-year quarterback.

“(Colletto) has got a real feel for the offense and he’s just going to get better and better and better,” Eagle said.

While the Camas offense delivered early explosion plays. The Camas defense blew up Sherwood’s attempts to deceive by getting into the Bowmen backfield in a hurry. Sherwood finished with 127 yards of net offense and its only touchdown drive was aided by a series of penalties.

Cody Jackson and Will Schultz were among the Papermakers to deliver quick blows by sacking Sherwood quarterback Jackson Travnicek.

It really made them have to run the ball, not be able to throw much. That really helped out the defense,” Jackson said. “We all did our jobs tonight.”

Which doesn’t mean the Papermakers can stop working. The next two games are long road trips to Yakima to face Davis and to Idaho power Coeur d’Alene.

“We’ll see what this team’s made of when we face some adversity and play a team at their place,” Mathews said.
