Brad Lackey, Tanner Toolson and Ethan Smith each scored 20-plus points to lead Union past Camas 79-63 on Monday night at Union High School.

For the Titans, starting off this year’s 4A Greater St. Helens League slate with a win is reassuring, as they do not anticipate an easy road toward reclaiming a league title.

“Any win you can get against any of the teams is good,” Union coach Blake Conley said. “Feels good good to get the first one, but we know there’s a lot of tough ones the rest of the year.”

Houston Combs dished out 10 assists, the most from a guard Conley could remember out of his program.

Smith had 11 of his 20 points in the first quarter. Then when Camas amped up its pressure on the sharpshooting guard, Lackey and Toolson took advantage of open looks. Both finished with 22 points.

That helped Union build after taking a three-point lead into halftime.

Lackey hit three 3s in the third quarter and Toolson had two 3s in the fourth, his last put Union up by 15 points with 5:28 left. The Titans did not let the Papermakers back in the game from there.

“(Toolson) had some big plays down low and big 3s,” Conley said. “He’s such a versatile player and I thought he showed his versatility.”

Camas was paced by 19 points from Carson Bonine, 17 from Jackson Clemmer and 14 from Isaiah Sampson.
