Car hits and injures 2 cyclists in Washougal

Two bicyclists were taken to the hospital after a car struck them in Washougal on Tuesday night.

Camas-Washougal Fire and Washougal Police Department personnel were dispatched about 8:10 p.m. to Southeast Stiles Road and 328th Avenue.

Initial reports indicated that a car had struck two cyclists, throwing both off their bikes, said Battalion Chief Larry Larimer.

One cyclist landed on the roadway while the other rider ended up in the bushes about 20 feet down an embankment along the side of the road, Larimer said.

Four people were needed to carry the latter cyclist up the embankment on a spine board. The slope off the side of the road was gentle enough to avoid using other mechanisms for the rescue.

Both cyclists were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening, Larimer said.

Washougal Police Department Detective Kate Tierney said the driver of the vehicle was cited for failing to yield.

Alcohol or speeding were not factors in the crash, Tierney said.
