Inadequate following distance caused a two-car crash at Padden Parkway and state Highway 503 that sent one person to the hospital Sunday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers said Joseph N. Hardin, 58, of Vancouver was heading south on Highway 503 and turning onto Padden Parkway westbound.

The driver ahead of him — Cynthia K. Schaff, 63, of Battle Ground — was ahead of him, and had slowed down to make the turn, the state patrol said.

Hardin rear-ended Schaff’s car, according to the state patrol.

Schaff and Hardin were unhurt, but a passenger in Schaff’s car, Kenneth W. Schaff, 72, also of Battle Ground, was injured and taken to Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center Vancouver.

His condition was not available.

The state patrol said Hardin was cited for following too closely.
