Weather Eye: Dry spell continues with no rain in sight before end of May

We are well into our three-day holiday and the weather is cooperating nicely with no rain or hot temperatures. We have some clouds with afternoon temperatures moving from the 60s yesterday into the 70s today and Memorial Day.

It could be worse with pouring rain for the holiday, but the dry weather continues. With not much chance of rain before the month ends, it could be a record dry spell in many Northwest cities. Vancouver’s monthly total is at .11 inches. That may be the final amount.

We’ll see more of an onshore flow of air Tuesday through Friday, and we could get a light shower or two and drizzle. But so far, we have been lucky in that sense.

The dry conditions contributed to grass fires along I-5 in Hazel Dell last week. Be careful with open flames as the grasses and woodlands are drying out. The marine air and cooler temperatures will help. I don’t see any 80 or 90-degree weather on the horizon.

You’ll have to water lawn and garden as soils continue to dry. The weather outlook for the summer continues to show warmer and drier than normal. With the rapid snowmelt underway, by midsummer perhaps both Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens will appear as ghastly rock monuments.

With Vancouver’s paltry rainfall so far this month, we are on tap to repeat May 1992 when we had the same amount for the month. That is the last time I could find when May was this dry.

Enjoy your holiday, fire up the grill, smile at the sunshine and remember what Memorial Day is all about.
