Letter: Sweeping changes needed for city

By Judi Hotovec, Vancouver

I have a complaint about the lack of support for city taxpayers in regards to the street-sweeping schedules — once every nine weeks is not support for our area, which has a large number of trees. How is it that Vancouver can keep giving tax rebates/discounts to developers and cannot even sweep the streets every month for current taxpayers?

I was recently in Hillsboro, Ore., (with a population 70,000 less than Vancouver) and they manage to sweep the streets 12 times per year, and do a major leaf cleanup in treed areas twice additionally in the fall. They also have the residents pile leaves up for pickup, as they actually support their taxpayers.

I am tired of picking up what falls in the street as I have had to pay for additional leaf bag pickups from Waste Management for leaves not from my trees. I will no longer do the street as I am tired of paying for what my taxes should take care of.

Just know that I will be voting against anyone who is on the city council in the future. Vancouver tries to project itself as wanting trees, but it does nothing to support the trees (or taxpayers) who are here.
