Weather Eye: Warmer, breezy conditions, rain come with system’s fronts

Our on again, off again winter weather is now back on again as a weather system brings clouds, rain and wind to the region and here in Clark County. The first front brings rain locally and perhaps early snow or freezing rain in the upper Gorge areas. Temperatures will be on the upswing back toward those familiar 50-degree high temperatures. Enough of that east wind.

The second front late tonight and Friday brings heavier rain and stronger winds to the ocean beaches, and we will see breezy conditions here as well but in the 20-30-plus mph range. They will be from the south and southwest so yeah, warmer conditions.

The mountains will get a burst of snow today, but alas, the snow level rises above 6,000 feet Friday, so rain at pass levels. Rain or showers continue through the weekend, and as we discussed the other day, next week appears to start out on the dry side. For how long? We’ll see. I’m still watching that bitter cold air to our north. We have escaped that all winter, but there’s still a risk of getting a quick plunge into the arctic conditions. If this were to occur, it would be the end of the month or early February.

Those cold mornings this week brought our average mean temperature back down to normal at 41 degrees. We’ll see how much rain we can muster the next four days as we are running 2.25 inches below average as of Wednesday afternoon.

Last year at this time, here is what I was writing: “Snow measurements taken on Mount Hood (Jan. 16) show that this is the lowest snow depth in the past 35 years during a La Nina winter. Snowpacks in Oregon mountains range from 25 to 50 percent of normal. Time for a reload!”

The same holds true in this El Nino winter. Fortunately, the Washington Cascades are doing better. Still time to catch up.
