Weather Eye: Chances of rain may dry up in time for Memorial Day weekend

As luck would have it, it was another dry weather day for the parade in Hazel Dell on Saturday morning — even for the festivities afterward. On the 39th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St. Helens, the weather gods smiled upon us.

Partly sunny or partly cloudy, your choice, and temperatures in the mid 60s to near 70 degrees made for a picture-perfect day. All of western Washington from Bellingham to Vancouver enjoyed mostly sunny skies and highs at 70 degrees plus. Even along the coast highs were close to 70 degrees.

However, at 5 p.m. did you see those dark clouds moving up from the south? They looked quite threatening, with rain and thunderstorms making it to the outskirts of the Rose City, and were forecast to bring rain and thunder to Clark County during the evening hours.

The weather pattern hasn’t changed much since we last chatted on Thursday. The main storm track is still favoring southern Oregon and California. Stormy weather has been making headlines in California and off into to the Great Basin.

I think we do keep the chance of rain or showers with a few dry periods through mid-week. After that we dry out and the long Memorial Day weekend is looking better and better with maybe partly sunny skies and mild temperatures. We will take a second look at the holiday on Tuesday.

For the month as of 5 p.m. Saturday, Vancouver is running 3.5 degrees above average with overall temperatures and 1.3 inches below average in the rainfall department.

Unfortunately, I must advise keeping the plants and lawn watered based on what I see for the rest of the month.
