Letter: Hijacked by Republicans

By Brenda Gardner, Vancouver
Published: January 26, 2020, 6:00am

In response to Mr. Johnson’s letter “Support of abortion greatest evil” (Our Readers’ Views, Jan. 16) opining that evangelicals can’t support Democratic candidates because of their pro-life position: You and your ilk are exactly the reason we have an immoral, dishonest, self-serving braggart as president. As long as a candidate is for making abortion illegal, you will vote for him or her. You have been hijacked by the Republicans who pander to your conservative Christian values. However, what you fail to see is that making abortions illegal will not prevent them from happening. They will just become unsafe. Nobody is pro-abortion, but most of us believe it should remain legal and safe.

As Christians what we should be doing is helping to prevent unwanted pregnancies, and caring for the children who are in the world now. What are you doing to assist the poor and disenfranchised of this community and the world? That is what Jesus asks of you. When the Republicans have power, they do everything they can to make the rich richer at the expense of the poor. Shame on you for identifying as a Christian and voting for candidates who only want to help the wealthy.

Wake up and smell the duplicity!
