Letter: Herrera Beutler doesn’t earn praise

I read with some chagrin the editorial, “In Our View: Herrera Beutler proves she can handle the truth” (Our Readers’ Views, May 24) and your tangential implication that this is the reason why we should reelect Herrera Beutler in 2022. You’ll forgive me, but this isn’t terribly high praise for a member of Congress. After all, I would expect the truth, and the defense of it, from my grandchildren.

Let’s recap. In 2016, Herrera Beutler declared that she could not vote for Donald Trump, ostensibly because of his reported treatment of women. Four years later, after she had a front-row seat to witness up-close and in-person just how much of a bigoted hate-filled porcine lunatic Trump really is, she was all-in on voting for Trump, gushing as to his wonderful qualities and fitness to serve.

Sure, Herrera Beutler voted to impeach Trump, and yes, she refutes the lie that Trump won the election, but does she really deserve your extraordinary praise for this? Again, I would expect the truth and the defense of it from my grandchildren, and sans special praise. After all, one shouldn’t expect a medal for doing what one is supposed to do. Herrera Beutler’s vote for Trump in the last election disqualifies her for holding office.
