Weather Eye: Enjoy the more ‘normal’ summer weather this week

Many of you enjoyed the cooler temperatures Monday and as of 5 p.m. Vancouver recorded a high of 87 degrees, down 12 degrees from Sunday’s high temperature. Yep, we were only one degree shy of 100 degrees Sunday. Could you notice? Ha-ha.

The weather forecast is on track as we discussed Sunday with a risk of a shower or thunderstorm today through early Wednesday morning. That pesky low is on the move and will introduce some unstable air to mix things up. It will drag cooler ocean air in behind it and we settle into the 80s the rest of the week with Wednesday the coolest day at 80 degrees with morning cloudiness.

There is a big threat for thunderstorms along the crest of the Cascades and possible dry lightning could ignite new wildfires. Fingers crossed but it appears likely at this point. Afternoon highs east of the mountains both in Washington and Oregon on Monday were mostly in the low 100s. Tinder-dry conditions are now present.

Looking ahead into next week, it is possible we will warm up again into the 90s and maybe into the excessive heat stuff. I hope not but as long as we have that huge dome of hot temperatures in the desert Southwest, its tentacles tend to work their way northwestward. That pushes our pleasant summer maritime air back to the coastline.

Another possibility is a cool trough of low-pressure swings through late in the weekend. A little of this and a little of that makes life interesting. We will certainly look at the western horizon in Sunday’s column so come back and join me.

Meanwhile, we’ll enjoy the more “normal” summer weather this week. A cool day to attend the fair would be Wednesday. I haven’t been but I wonder if they still have those fresh peach milkshakes at the Dairy Women’s ice cream building?

Three weeks left in August and time to play the fiddle like the grasshopper and enjoy the waning days of summer. I haven’t seen any grasshoppers yet, have you? Maybe too hot for them. Keep watering flowers and plants and the garden. It may be cooler this week but the thirst continues.
