Letter: Have businesses pay for schools

By Laurie Schmid, Vancouver

We need to change how schools are funded. Tax businesses, not properties.

Approximately 48 percent of a school’s budget comes from state resources, including sales tax and fees. Another 44 percent is contributed locally, primarily through the property taxes of homeowners in the area. Districts with lower property values are receiving less equalizing funding from the state, known as LEA funds. Without a legislative fix, school districts will be forced to slice their budgets, which means potential cuts to school programs and staff. Businesses directly benefit from public education. They should pay more in taxes — a tax meant specifically for public education.
