Weather Eye: Batten the hatches, as wind gusts up to 50 mph possible

It was another chilly morning Wednesday all around Clark County and especially here in the city of Vancouver. We officially dropped to 25 degrees, tying the record set way back in 1955. Those east winds died down enough to allow subfreezing temperatures everywhere. It was certainly a killing frost. One report from near Moulton Falls showed 18 degrees, which is winter temperatures for sure.

Those strong east winds backed off a little Wednesday but will ramp up today and Friday. Wind advisories are up for today with gusts to 50 mph. Batten the hatches. Besides the wind, more frosty mornings and sunny days are on tap. The weather pattern change begins later on Sunday and Monday, when we should be back in a westerly flow of air off the ocean, which always spells rain for us. This is a developing situation, so how much rain we get is still up in the air. Snow levels will be high next week, at least at first.

Which rings a bell to report the rainfall from your friends and neighbors for October before that becomes a distant memory and more rain falls next week. Rob Starr, Cougar, 7.64 inches; Jim Knoll, Five Corners, 3.66 inches; Robin Ruzek, Lake Shore, 2.65 inches; Chuck Houghten, Hockinson Heights, 5 inches; Tyler Mode, Battle Ground, 3.81 inches; Bob Mode, Minnehaha, 2.41 inches; Irv St. Germain, Prune Hill, 4.31 inches; Ellen Smart, Ridgefield, 2.60 inches; Claudia Chiasson, Carson, 5.74 inches; and Dick Lenahan, Meadow Glade, 3.24 inches. Our friend Roland Derksen in Vancouver, B.C., reported a deluge in October with 7.41 inches. The official rainfall for our Vancouver was 2.69 inches, .72 of an inch below average.

I want to take a moment and express my gratitude to all the weather observers who diligently record the daily weather and share their rainfall observations with us each month. Some of them have been sending me weather reports for the nearly 32 years I have been writing this column. Kudos!

We’ll dive into Thanksgiving weather in Sunday’s column and carve out a forecast.
