Weather Eye: Enjoy interlude as we watch heat wave forecast models

Greetings and welcome to the first full week of August. Each day this month so far we have had high temperatures in the 80s with no excessive heat. The clouds that streamed over us from east of the Cascades Friday through Sunday put a damper on the predicted heat wave and highs in the 90s. That was the silver lining in those clouds. Only a few sprinkles but the heat was kept at bay.

We did have enough sprinkles to measure Sunday with 0.01 of an inch, putting an end to our 47 days without measurable rain. It did little to settle the dust or dampen anyone’s spirits. The Clark County Fair went on without a hitch. It would have been refreshing to get a little bit more rain as long as we had the clouds and moisture with us.

Did you feel the humidity over the weekend? Way above what we usually experience at this time of the year. We have another batch of clouds rolling in tonight and most likely we will get a better chance of raindrops. More than Sunday’s but less than a tenth of an inch overall. Traveling north are you Wednesday? The Puget Sound region will get a real soaking rain with amounts up to one-half inch. Much needed there.

The weather system will move quickly, and skies will clear on Thursday with highs back in the 80s. If the clouds are thick enough and last all day on Wednesday, we may not reach 80 degrees. However, it will be a nice interlude I believe. Even with clouds and scattered showers around, the humidity will feel much better as this air will be from northern latitudes rather than from the desert Southwest that we endured over the weekend. A drier sort of wet, ha-ha!

So, where do we go from there? You may have been hearing about a heat wave developing over the weekend and forecast models are still showing that, although not as hot as they were. Best bet we are in the 90s Sunday and Monday but remaining below 100 degrees. Forecasters got burned last weekend with the expected hot weather, so we’ll wait and see how this develops.

If you get a little rain at all on Wednesday, go out and dance a little in the yard. We’ll chat on Thursday.
