Letter: Support for Kent is premature

Regarding Matthew Garland’s letter (“Rally behind Joe Kent,” Our Readers’ Views, Aug. 23), his support of Joe Kent, as well as that of the local Republican Party, seems a bit premature.

Kent continues to support Donald Trump, as can be seen from his social media. The 14th Amendment of the Constitution states, “No person shall be a … Representative in Congress, … or hold any office, … under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, … to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.” Kent was an officer of the United States. He has given aid and comfort to those who engaged in the attempted coup.

I hope that the loyal Americans of Washington’s 3rd District use the law to ensure that Kent and his fellow travelers are kept off the ballot for elective office.
