Girls roundup: Union 9-0 after opening Surf N Slam with win

Brooklynn Haywood scored 28 points as Union girls basketball opened play at the Surf N Slam tournament with a 60-40 win over Justin-Siena on Wednesday.

Haywood scored 20 points in the second half as the Titans improved to 9-0.

Ava Smith scored 14 points, including four of Union’s seven 3-pointers. Rowyn Riley added eight points, including two 3-pointers.

Justin-Sienna of Napa, Calif. entered Wednesday’s game with an 8-2 record.

The Titans continue play in the San Diego-area tournament Thursday against either Shorewood.

SAMMAMISH 57, WOODLAND 51 — Kennedy Bockert had 31 points as the Beavers lost a close game at the T-Town Throwdown in Tacoma.

Bockert, a 6-foot freshman post, had 15 of Woodland’s 20 field goals. She also had 13 rebounds and four steals.

Woodland (4-5) trailed 30-27 at halftime and 41-39 after three quarters.

Sophia Eastman scored 10 of her 29 points in the fourth quarter for Sammamish (5-4), which made 7 of 9 free throws down the stretch.

ST. MARGARET’S (Calif.) 47, PRAIRIE 34 — Harmony Fallin scored 10 points as the Falcons dropped the first of their four games at the SoCal Prep Holiday Classic in San Diego.

Fallin scored six points in the first quarter as Prairie (1-5) led 12-9. But the Falcons were outscored 13-2 in the second quarter by their opponents from San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Prairie next faces Valencia (Calif.) in round-robin play Thursday.

ALAMEDA (Calif.) 61, HOCKINSON 34 — Siena Brown scored 167 points to lead the Hawks in their opening game at the Surf N Slam tournament in La Jolla, Calif.

Alameda (7-1) started fast, leading 26-8 after one quarter and 46-11 at halftime.

LUTHERAN SOUTH (Mo.) 75, KELSO 57 — The Lassies couldn’t overcome a slow start in their first game at the Cactus Jam in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Lutheran South of St. Louis, Mo., led 24-12 after the first quarter and 39-19 at halftime.

Kelso (3-6) found its footing in the third quarter, making five 3-pointers and outscoring Lutheran South 27-14.

Bregan Ruhland led Kelso with 17 points, all in the second half.

VALLEY CATHOLIC (Ore.) 63, R.A. LONG 32 — Alauna Brown scored 13 points as the Lumberjills opened play at the Vince Dulcich Tournament in Astoria, Ore.

Breyelle Box added seven points and five rebounds for R.A. Long (0-9).

Lotam Minweh scored 15 points to lead Valley Catholic of Beaverton, Ore.
