Letter: Lewallen is off the mark

The article covering Leslie Lewallen’s announcement of her candidacy for the 3rd District House seat (“Leslie Lewallen sets sights on Washington’s 3rd Congressional District seat,” The Columbian, Nov. 2) shows that her grasp on the truth is nearly as weak as her principal Republican opponent, Joe Kent.

She says she wants to put a cap “on all this excessive spending.” Like the defense budget? Like Social Security? Like Medicare and the Affordable Care Act?

She opposes light rail on the Interstate 5 Bridge because that would be “a one-way ticket for all of Portland’s homelessness, crime and drugs” to come to Vancouver. As if light rail would be the only way for Portland residents to get here?

She accuses Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of not working across the aisle in Congress. This is belied by our representative’s voting record. And she accuses Perez of not “solving any problems” during her stint in Congress. Perhaps Lewallen has forgotten who is in the majority in the House, and who controls the agenda, namely the Trump wing of the party.

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is a commonsense member of Congress, and 3rd District voters should return her to Congress again next fall.
