HOCKINSON — After dominating the first half, Hockinson had to withstand a fourth-quarter comeback to escape with a 30-22 win over R.A. Long in a 2A Greater St. Helens League game on Thursday.

Hockinson’s defense limited R.A. Long to 27 yards of offense and just one first down in the first half.

A bad snap led to an intentional grounding call on the Lumberjacks, giving Hockinson a 2-0 lead with 7:12 left in the first quarter.

Good field position allowed the Hockinson offense to get rolling. Aiden Donowitz threw three touchdowns passes, two to Gage Prepula, as the Hawks (1-3, 1-1 2A GSHL) built a 30-0 lead by halftime.

But the Hawks were unable to add to their lead in the third, allowing the Lumberjacks (1-3, 0-2) time to find their offensive stride.

Nicholas Niday entered the game at quarterback late in the third quarter. Niday hit Koynn Williamdyke with a 50-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 30-8 with 11:45 left in the game.

After the defense held, R.A. Long got within 30-16 on a 39-yard touchdown pass to Williamdyke with 8:14 left.

The Lumberjacks recovered the ensuing onside kick, but were unable to convert, fumbling the ball back to the Hawks.

R.A. Long got the ball back and drove to the Hockinson 31 before turning it over on downs with 3:14 left.

Niday hit Lonnie Brown Jr., with a 19-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds to play. The Hawks sealed the win by recovering an onside kick.

Carter Cameron caught 12 passes for 112 yards for Hockinson. Prepula and Cameron each had an interception on defense.

Niday completed 10 of 15 passes for 157 yards and three touchdowns.
