In early January 1956, heavy rains and melting snow supersaturated Clark County soil, creating landslides, washing out county roads, producing power outages and undermining the foundation of the Salmon Creek Bridge, causing it to collapse into a V-shape. The bridge failure halted Highway 99 travel in both directions until a temporary Bailey bridge from Fort Lewis restored traffic days later.
