UPDATE: The Vancouver School District announced that Salmon Creek Elementary will reopen Thursday.
Salmon Creek Elementary closed at 1 p.m. after the main waterline to the building broke Wednesday morning, officials said.
Vancouver Public Schools personnel were initially hoping to get the line fixed Wednesday so classes could return to normal, said Kris Sork, VPS spokeswoman.
Children were released at 1 p.m. and buses ran early, Sork said. If a child's parent or emergency contact wasn't reached, the child was taken to Alki Middle School for the rest of the day.
Crews need to turn off water to the school to make repairs. District officials anticipate that the line will be repaired Wednesday and classes will resume Thursday at the normal time, Sork said.
