Camping sites under consideration at Coldwater Lake

The Forest Service is considering creation of as many as seven backcountry camping sites along the shore of Coldwater Lake north of Mount St. Helens.

Tom Mulder, manager of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, issued a scoping letter in late April on possible campsite designation.

The agency has identified sites four potential camp locations near the upper end of Coldwater Lake, two along the south shore and one in the Elk Bench area.

The Mount St. Helens Citizen Advisory Committee of 2008-09 made several recommendations to enhance visitor services at the peak.

Backcountry campsites would diversify recreational opportunities available to the public on the west side of the monument.

Some of the seven locations would have a single campsite, while others would have multiple sites. All would be open to the public, but access means might vary between hiking, biking or boat; as part of an education program, or with an outfitter-guide.

The sites likely would be on a reservation system, similar to the Mount Margaret backcountry camping permits. The camps would be developed only to a low, backcountry level with pack-in, pack-out restrictions.

Lisa Romano, community engagement specialist for the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, said a draft analysis and proposed action is expected out this fall.

If the proposal is for campsites, a more detailed environmental assessment likely will be required.
