Letter: Bible remains relevant

The Columbian
Published: June 4, 2015, 12:00am

I appreciate The Columbian printing Jon Cates’ May 29 letter “Think of the Bible as a period piece,” where he suggests the Bible has no relevance to issues in our current time. It serves as an opportunity for correction. He states it was written a little over 1,000 years ago. It was authored closer to 2,000 years ago, shortly after Christ’s death.

Is it relevant to our time? Here’s a few of the Ten Commandments: thou shalt not kill, steal or take your neighbor’s wife. If any of those commandments are getting in the way of your lifestyle, I can see why you wouldn’t like them.

Christ’s last message to mankind before he left was “Love one another.” I guess it doesn’t apply to Cates or any of us. In the meantime, Cates, have a great Christmas this year, a wonderful Easter next year … oh and have a fun New Year celebration based on the birth of Christ.

Finally, enjoy your First Amendment rights and freedoms provided you by our devout Christian Founding Fathers, especially Thomas Jefferson who personally, in 1775, penned our Declaration of Independence, stating that your freedom is “God given.” Peace.
