Hockinson secured the top seed from the 2A Greater St. Helens League and at least a share of the league title Friday with a 48-0 victory over Woodland.

The first quarter presented showed a potential defensive-minded game plan. Woodland fumbled and each team failed on a fourth down attempt on their next possession. Led by Steven Carlisle, the Hawks took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter where Hockinson flipped the switch.

Jared Oja and Peter Schultz-Rathbun each had rushing touchdowns in the second quarter. Canon Racanelli found Cameron Loos and Kedrick Johnson for two more touchdowns in the quarter. Matt Henry intercepted two passes and the rest of the defense forced two more turnovers.

What seemed to be a low-scoring affair suddenly transitioned into a Hockinson onslaught.

“The first couple times we didn’t get our offense squared away,” Racanelli said. “We figured it out pretty quick.”

And the scoring didn’t end there.

The Hawks scored on their first two possessions in the third quarter as Racanelli found Johnson for the second time and Mitch Lines pushed his way across the plane.

While the offense was clicking, the defense allowed just 10 total rushing yards and forced six turnovers throughout the evening.

“Our defense has been making plays,” Racanelli said. “We know we can stop the run, we just need to stop the passes and we did tonight.”

Although the team claimed the 2A GSHL title, Racanelli and the players knew there was more work to do.

“I’m glad we got it done,” he said. “We have to win the next week and keep it rolling.”

Johnson, following the victory, succinctly said: “We have one more game.”

Racanelli also spilled the Hawks game plan for the next couple weeks: “Keep winning games. Get ready for playoffs. We’ll see what happens.”
