PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — A 17-year-old boy died when he was struck by a train east of Pendleton.
Umatilla Tribal Police identified the victim as Kanine McKay, an enrolled member of the Yakama Tribe who had recently been living with relatives on the Umatilla Indian Reservation.
A tribal news release says investigators learned that the operator of the eastbound train saw a person lying across the tracks Tuesday morning, but couldn’t stop in time.
According to The East Oregonian newspaper, witnesses told investigators the victim had his hands folded across his chest and was wearing earphones.
