Central Florida holds off Old Dominion 75-71

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Calvin Newell scored 17 points and Keith Clanton had 15 to lead Central Florida to a 75-71 victory over Old Dominion on Friday night.

Isaiah Sykes and Keith Clanton added 14 points each for the Golden Knights (6-2), and Sykes contributed seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Aaron Bacote led the Monarchs (1-9) with 19 points, Donte Hill had 14 and DeShawn Painter 13.

Old Dominion made more field goals (25-24) and 3-pointers (9-8) than Central Florida, but the Golden Knights outscored the Monarchs from the foul line 19-12.

The Monarchs took their only lead of the game at 51-50 on Dimitri Batten’s free throws with 11:44 remaining, but Sykes’ layup pushed the Eagles’ advantage to 54-51, and ODU could never catch up.

Richard Ross’ layup cut it to 71-69 with 23 seconds left, but Tristan Spurluck and Sykes made two free throws each to close out the game.
