Construction work will completely close a section of southbound Interstate 5 in Portland overnight tonight, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Crews will begin closing southbound lanes south of the Marquam Bridge at about 10:30 p.m., with the full closure beginning at 11:30 p.m.. The freeway will re-open by 5 a.m. Wednesday, according to ODOT.

The closure will allow a contractor to work on the Gibbs Street Pedestrian Bridge over the freeway. Work above I-5 will continue through the week, and future closures may occur.

During tonight’s closure, drivers heading south through Portland can take Interstate 405 to get around the construction. Traffic on Southwest Harbor Drive may also follow a signed detour to reach the freeway, according to ODOT.

Access from southbound I-5 to Interstate 84 and the Morrison Bridge will remain open.
