The Interstate 5 Bridge connecting Vancouver and Portland this year landed on one magazine’s list of most dangerous bridges — twice.
Both the northbound and southbound spans of the drawbridge were listed separately among 20 structures in Travel+Leisure magazines’s “America’s Most Dangerous Bridges” rankings published this year.
The southbound and northbound spans of the I-5 Bridge are ranked No. 15 and No. 16, respectively. The magazine cites the high number of crashes that occur on and around the bridge in its rankings. The southbound side opened in 1958, while the northbound side, the original Interstate Bridge, opened in 1917.
The magazine used sufficiency ratings and other data from the Federal Highway Administration in ranking bridges with an average daily traffic volume above 50,000. The list was published in July, two months after the I-5 Skagit River Bridge collapsed and severed the freeway in northern Washington.
The most dangerous bridge, according to the list, was the double-deck roadway carrying part of Storrow Drive in Boston.
