A minivan and a car heading east on Southeast 34th Street in Vancouver collided today during a lane change, sending both vehicles into fences on opposite sides of the road.

“Based on what I’m seeing, it could have been a fatality quite easily,” Officer Ilia Botvinnik of the Vancouver Police Department said. “It’s kind of amazing that no pedestrians … or anyone else got hurt.”

The 4:50 p.m. wreck happened near the intersection of 34th Street and 168th Avenue. A Toyota Matrix driven by a woman who appeared to be in her 30s struck a stone fence. The minivan, driven by a man in his 40s or 50s, blasted through a wooden fence and hit the side of a house but didn’t enter the building, Botvinnik said.

No injuries were reported, but both vehicles were heavily damaged. Wet roads were a factor, police said.

“It’s just one of those car physics things where a car was hit in the right place at the right time and caused the other car to spin,” said Botvinnik, who did not believe alcohol or drugs played a role.

Police are investigating the incident.
