I’ll give Julia Rosenstein (“Action needed on acidification,” Our Readers’ Views, June 6) the benefit of the doubt that she’s missed all of Jaime Herrera Beutler’s work throughout the years to protect our salmon, fight ocean acidification, preserve our forests, and deftly balance those priorities with our need to live and work. Julia wrote a letter claiming our congresswoman had taken no action to address ocean acidification (which quickly devolved into an incoherent “save the whales,” anti-Trump rant).
Jaime’s bipartisan bill to address ocean acidification was just approved by the U.S. House by a vote of 395-22, which was reported by The Columbian in its story “U.S. House passes Herrera Beutler bill on ocean acidification” (June 6, The Columbian).
By using existing funds (read: no taxing or spending increases) to incentivize private innovation, Herrera Beutler has found a productive way to tackle a serious environmental challenge facing our planet. I hope Rosenstein and all other critics take the time to acknowledge this achievement, and not just launch more baseless attacks.
