Weather Eye: Enjoy sunshine, brief break from downpours

How disappointing it was to see the thermometer in Vancouver at 5 p.m. Monday reading 52 degrees and that was with full sunshine. That is 15 degrees below where it should be. If you had a nice sun break and sat on a chair out of the wind it was kind of pleasant, surprisingly. However, showers and even thunderstorms were scattered about Monday afternoon and evening.

Overnight lows early Monday ranged from the low 30s to around 40 degrees in Clark County. Did you see any frost? The National Weather Service issued a frost advisory late Sunday for much of the area, especially along the coastline. Rare for May, I say, to include the ocean beaches.

At least today and Wednesday we should be dry but still not up to the average high of 67 degrees, but we should be around 60 degrees plus or minus with the higher angle of the sun. Then Thursday comes along, and we return to saturating rainfall with lingering showers early Friday. Although showers are in the forecast over the weekend, the air mass will be warmer, and we have possible highs between 65 and 70 degrees. Fingers crossed.

Once again with the showery nature of the precipitation some locations had downpours and others not much at all. The official rain tally for Vancouver so far this month is 1.80 inches, and we are only a third of the way through the month. More rain showers the next couple of weeks will surely take us past the normal rainfall for the month.

I expect the month to continue to be cool, although of course we’ll have a few days about average and break the 70-degree mark (hopefully). I suspect that June will carry on the cool and damp pattern, but we’ll see.

My petunias are in hanging baskets outside and although in full bloom are showing sad droopy faces hoping for warmer days ahead. I’m sure they will perk up along with you and me today and Wednesday with a short break from the downpours and more sunshine.
