Weather Eye: Dry, warmer-than-average days before rain returns Friday

Our quiet weather pattern will continue this week, although a few showers were expected Monday overnight. Rainfall amounts could be a quarter of an inch or less. Dry weather rebounds today through Thursday with highs at 50 degrees or higher. Above average for sure.

Over the weekend we had below average low temperatures in Vancouver with 27 degrees Saturday and Sunday.

The next batch of rain heading our way will be Friday or Friday night, but amounts won’t be excessive. This time when moisture arrives, colder air aloft will drop snow levels perhaps to our foothills. Highs will be in the 40s this weekend. No white Christmas is expected.

I mentioned in my last column how I enjoyed the warmth of winter in my car after shopping Friday. A reader sent me an email and educated me with a new word that I’ll share with you. The word is apricity, which is Latin and means “the warmth of the sun in winter.”

If I had to make a forecast for Christmas Day, I would venture to guess that we would have cloudy skies with a chance of light rain or showers and afternoon temperatures in the low to mid-40s. A cool and cloudy day. Snow levels would be below the mountain passes as it appears now.

Vancouver’s monthly rainfall amounts stood at 6.48 inches as of 4 p.m. Monday, which is of course above average for the entire month of December. The average mean temperature has lowered to 5 degrees above normal thanks to those frosty mornings recently.
