Weather Eye: Lots of clouds, cooler temperatures for next week or so

The first day of May got off to a lackluster start with the clouds hanging in and our high temperature not even reaching 60 degrees. The next day was better with afternoon temperatures in the upper 60s and finally, Wednesday we passed with honors with temperatures in the mid-70s. Did it feel a bit humid?

A low to our southeast that was off the coast a few days ago and drifted southward to California was moving eastward Wednesday evening and with the wrap-around flow of air coming our way from the east, scattered thunderstorms were in the offing. Perhaps last night’s lightning could be seen to our east. A possible thunderstorm could have drifted away from the Cascades and brought some nocturnal showers. This was still possible early today, abating later in the day.

Another area of low pressure drops from the Gulf of Alaska, and you know what that means. Remember April weather? Yeah, cold and wet. Our expected highs for the foreseeable future (like a week or so) will be only in the 60- to 65-degree range. Friday and Sunday may struggle like Monday of this week to reach 60 degrees. Depends on cloud cover and showers.

Although we will be under the influence of a relatively cool air mass, at this time I don’t expect rainfall amounts to be that impressive. A possible heavy shower would be the exception. Besides plenty of clouds, also expect some brief clearing periods and bright sunshine.

That’s how it looks as of this writing. Hopefully the cooler and cloudier weather will change sooner than expected. But this month could be harboring some of April’s traits; time will tell.

Usually at this time of the year I begin giving you some weather hints about the Hazel Dell Parade of Bands. It is usually safe to predict that during the parade it will be mild and dry, it hardly ever rains. Maybe some drizzle before or after but the weather is most often perfect for a parade. And why not? For Saturday, May 20, I’ll go with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s at parade time and afternoon highs in the 70s. Chance of rain 10 percent.

I’ll see you on Sunday and look ahead to the new week.
