Vancouver man faces murder allegation in Jan. 6 fatal shooting after being apprehended in central Washington

A suspect in a Jan. 6 fatal shooting in Vancouver was taken into custody in Central Washington by the Sunnyside Police Department and now faces a murder allegation, among other charges.

Abel R. Rodriguez, 35, of Vancouver was booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, first-degree assault and drive-by shooting, according to a statement from Vancouver police.

About 3:20 a.m. Jan. 6, officers responded to a call for shots fired at the intersection of East 18th Street and Bryant Street in the Maplewood neighborhood of central Vancouver. Callers said a person had been shot, according to police. Officers found James Sinem, 22, of Vancouver unresponsive on the sidewalk.

“Despite lifesaving efforts from officers, the victim was pronounced deceased,” Vancouver police said in a statement.

About midnight Thursday, Rodriguez was apprehended by Sunnyside police with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force. No other details about the circumstances of the apprehension were released.
