HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) — Jesse Steele scored 28 points, 16 in the second half, as Monmouth defeated Fairleigh Dickinson 80-76 Sunday in a Northeast Conference game.

After Melquan Bolding’s tip-in for Fairleigh Dickinson tied the game for the 10th time, 64-64 with 3:36 remaining, baskets by Ed Waite and Max DiLeo put the Hawks (9-16, 4-8) on top 69-64 with 1:34 to play.

Two free throws by Stephen Spinella with 3 seconds left secured Monmouth’s sixth win in a row over the Knights (7-18, 2-10), who lost their 10th straight game.

Waite finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Dion Nesmith had 14 points, including 10 of 11 free throws, for Monmouth, which sank 27 of 32 (84.4 percent) from the line to the Knights’ 19 of 25.

Bolding finished with 20 points for Fairleigh Dickinson.

The game was rescheduled from Saturday because of the winter storm that affected the Northeast.
