Trained members of the all-volunteer Volcano Rescue Team, lashed to a rope system behind them, prepare to hoist injured kayaker Joseph Grudger about 15 feet up a ledge along the North
Fork of the Lewis River in Skamania County on Wednesday. Once they reached the top of the ledge, still attached to the ropes, they carried him uphill for about 100 yards to the road and an ambulance.
