The federal budget cuts imposed by the sequester are impacting research and monitoring activities at volcanoes throughout the United States. At Mount St. Helens, pictured here, cuts have caused cancellation of a planned open house at the observatory, which had been set for May 4. The U.S. Geological Survey, which operates the Cascades Volcano Observatory, has also implemented a hiring freeze, cut participation in scientific conferences and canceled all non-mandatory, non-critical training in response to the budget cuts. Some employees may also have to be furloughed.
